Information

The Shelly i3 is EOL, the alternative is the Shelly Plus i4.

Use your wall switch(es) to wirelessly control your lights, awning, or roller shutters. Easily create smart scenes (scenarios) in the free app for your home automation system. Voice control with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa is also possible; "Hey Google, turn on the table lamp".

The Shelly i3 is a very affordable and smart small WiFi in-wall switch for your Smart Home System, which can be installed behind your wall switches. The open-source nature allows you to integrate the Shelly i3 with almost any home automation system. Shelly also offers its own free app, enabling you to set up a Smart Home System easily and inexpensively without the need for a Gateway/Hub. The Shelly i3 smart switch supports 110-240VAC or 24-60VDC but has no outputs (no relay). The Shelly i3 is designed to wirelessly control other Shelly relays or smart plugs, with up to 3 inputs for 8 actions per button, allowing for a maximum of 24 scenes:

  • On/Off (toggle switch)
  • On/Off Short press (momentary switch)
  • Long press (momentary switch)
  • 2x Short press (momentary switch)
  • 3x Short press (momentary switch)
  • Short + Long press (momentary switch)
  • Long + Short press (momentary switch)

Install the Shelly i3 according to the manual, connect via WiFi with the free Shelly App, and link your Shelly i3 with other Shelly devices using Actions or Scenes. It couldn't be simpler! It works perfectly in combination with the GIRA 3-gang momentary switch.

The Shelly i3 switch supports 110-240VAC or 24-60VDC and has an ESP8266 with a 4MB flash chip built-in. This makes it possible to flash your own or alternative firmware, such as Tasmota or HomeKit. You will need a USB-to-UART 3.3V and at least a 350mA adapter, like our FTDI adapter. The best part is, you don't even need to open the Shelly. Flashing is easy via the accessible pins on the outside.
NOTE: Never connect the Shelly i3 to the power grid while flashing!

But why flash? The Shelly i3 has a built-in HTTP web server (port 80), which acts as a simple web page that allows the user to integrate the Shelly i3.

Works with

homey
Google
HomeKit
HomeSeer
Domoticz
Home Assistant
SmartThings
OpenHab
Alexa
MQTT

* Apple HomeKit requires flashing or a Homebridge

If you prefer not to use the free Shelly cloud service but still want to control your devices remotely, no problem. Shelly i3 also supports basic MQTT (Message Queue Telemetry Transport) for reliable connections via a central broker. The connected devices only communicate with the broker and do not know each other directly. They don't need to know the IP addresses or technical details of the other participants. This makes it secure and reliable, with real-time monitoring and easy integration. Want to learn more? Read our Shelly WiFi Switch Blog.</ p>
