With this capacitive soil moisture sensor / hygrometer, you can easily measure the moisture level of plants and detect when the plant needs water. Order the sensor together with the Shelly UNI for a cheaper price.
Our Soil Moisture Sensor Module has an integrated amplifier, allowing it to be directly connected to an analog input of a Shelly UNI. The probe is inserted into the soil and measures the capacitance of the earth, which changes with moisture. The advantage of our Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor is that there is no wear or corrosion.
The moisture sensor (hygrometer) does not have an adjustable switch; it works analogically and provides real-time moisture values. It is suitable for all microcontrollers with 5V and analog input, such as the Shelly UNI. The analog ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) input gives an output of approximately 2V for dry soil and about 0.9V for wet soil, allowing you to send yourself a message to water the plants. Since the sensor works capacitively, it does not contaminate the substrate even after long periods, resulting in high durability.
NOTE: the sensor operates on 5V, while the Shelly UNI is powered with a higher voltage. You will need to power both separately and, of course, protect the electronics from moisture.
Connect the Shelly UNI to, for example, 12VDC red (Plus) and black (Minus), and connect it with the Shelly Cloud app.
Then connect the Hygrometer to 5VDC, such as an old 5V USB charger from your smartphone.
Connect the Shelly UNI white wire to the yellow wire of the Hygrometer.
Connect the Shelly UNI green wire to the Minus (GND) of the USB and the black wire of the Hygrometer.
Connect the Plus (VCC) of the USB to the red wire of the Hygrometer.
Now, in the Shelly App, create ADC Actions in the UNI settings to switch the relay On and Off, and set up smart scenes to send yourself a message on your smartphone saying, "Water the plants."
